Getting the Stump Out of the Way

Stump grinding uses a machine with a toothed cutting wheel to chew a stump and its main surface roots into chips, usually several inches below the surface of the lawn. It is faster and far less disruptive than digging a stump out, and it leaves a hole that can be filled with soil and covered with sod. In Orlando yards, the stumps we grind are mostly oaks, pines and palms, and each behaves a little differently under the grinder.

Oaks, pines and palms

Oak stumps are dense and often have thick buttress roots spreading toward driveways and sidewalks; UF/IFAS notes that live oak roots can lift curbs, sidewalks and driveways over time. Pine stumps are resinous and grind relatively quickly, but the roots can run a long way in sandy soil. Palm stumps are fibrous rather than woody; grinding them is mainly about clearing space and leveling the lawn.

Buried lines come first

Irrigation lines, low-voltage lighting, pool plumbing and utility service lines often run close to where trees were planted. OUC reminds customers to call 811 before digging so buried electric and water lines get marked, and a grinder working several inches deep counts as digging. We arrange the locate before the job and flag sprinkler heads and pool lines you point out so the grinder stays clear of them.

After the grinding

Grinding leaves a mound of chips mixed with sandy soil. You can keep the chips as mulch, have them raked into the hole, or have them hauled away and the hole topped with soil. Chips break down and settle, so a filled hole may need a little more soil after a few months of summer rain. If you plan to replant in the same spot, it helps to remove most of the chips first; a new tree is usually better placed a few feet away from the old root mass.

When the stump is near something

Stumps against fences, slabs, pool decks or foundations can be ground down only as close as the machine can safely reach. We tell you at the estimate if part of a stump will have to be cut by hand or left, and how deep the grind can go in that spot.

Typical Jobs

Grinding is priced by the stump, with cleanup choices listed.

Single stump grinding

One stump ground below grade, chips left in place or removed.

Multiple stumps

Several stumps from past removals ground on the same visit, usually at a lower price per stump.

Surface root grinding

Roots that lift turf or trip mowers ground down along their length.

Chip removal and backfill

Chips hauled off and the hole filled with soil, ready for sod or seed.

Palm stump grinding

Fibrous palm stumps ground flat so the lawn or bed can be leveled.

Stump Grinding Questions

How much does stump grinding cost in Orlando?

HomeGuide's 2026 national figures put the first stump at about $120 to $400, or roughly $2 to $6 per inch of diameter, with additional stumps at $30 to $60 each. A large oak stump or one in a tight spot costs more. We price it after seeing it.

How deep do you grind a stump?

Usually several inches below the surrounding grade, deep enough to lay sod or soil over it. Near slabs, fences and pool decks, the depth may be limited by what the machine can reach safely.

Will grinding hit my sprinkler lines?

We locate public utilities through 811 and ask you to show us irrigation, lighting and pool lines, which 811 does not mark. Heads near the stump are flagged so we can work around them.

Is stump grinding the same as stump removal?

Not quite. Grinding turns the stump into chips in place. Stump removal means digging or pulling the whole root ball out, which is slower and leaves a bigger hole, so it is usually only needed when building over the spot.
