A Small Town With Big Trees

Tree Service in Windermere is shaped by a town that has kept its old character on purpose. Most roads in the downtown grid are still dirt; locals call the unpaved road just west of Main Street 'Dirt Main Street.' The town sits on a narrow isthmus between Lake Down and Lake Butler, and big oaks shade both the sand lanes and the lakefront estates. All of that changes how a tree job gets done, from where the truck parks to how the wood leaves the property.

Planning access on sand roads

Soft sand roads and narrow lanes do not suit heavy equipment parked for hours. On many Windermere lots we plan the job so that the chipper sits on a firm surface, branches are dragged or carried to it, and big wood is cut to sizes that can be loaded by hand or a small loader. After rain, we may reschedule a heavy job rather than leave ruts in a road neighbors share. These are details we talk through at the estimate so the work fits the street.

Lakefront lots on the Butler Chain

Homes facing Lake Butler and Lake Down often have steep lawns running to the water, docks, boathouses and seawalls. Trees there are frequently leaning toward the lake and carrying long limbs over the dock. Removing one usually means taking it apart in pieces and lowering each one, rather than dropping it whole. A crane is sometimes the safest option when a large tree is wedged between a house and the water, and we will say so if we think that is the case.

What the town says about state law

Windermere's Tree Board page summarizes Florida Statute 163.045: a local government cannot require a notice, permit, fee, mitigation or replanting for pruning or removing a tree on residential property when the owner gets documentation from an ISA-certified arborist or Florida-licensed landscape architect that the tree presents a danger to people or property. The statute was revised in 2022 to define 'danger,' 'documentation' and 'residential property' more clearly. For trees that are not dangerous, check with the town's Public Works department before removal.

A town that grew without getting busy

Windermere was founded in 1887 by John Dawe, an Englishman who named it for England's Lake District, and was incorporated in 1925. Its population was 3,030 at the 2020 census, up from 2,462 in 2010, partly because Butler Bay voted to join the town in 2007. The median age was 47.7. In a town this size, a big oak is part of the street, and most owners we talk to want trees kept healthy, not cleared.

Typical Windermere work

  • Crown reduction on large live oaks over roofs, docks and boathouses
  • Sectional removal of lake-leaning trees with rigging
  • Deadwood removal before hurricane season
  • Clearing branches over unpaved lanes so delivery and emergency vehicles fit
  • Stump grinding on finished lawns, with chip cleanup

Windermere Details

  • Dirt streets. Most roads in Windermere's downtown grid are dirt, except a few through roads such as Main Street, Sixth Avenue, Second Avenue and Chase Road; the unpaved road west of Main is known as Dirt Main Street.
  • Between two lakes. The town sits on an isthmus between Lake Down and Lake Butler in the Butler chain and covers about 2.69 square miles, roughly 0.75 of it water.
  • State dangerous-tree rule. The Windermere Tree Board's page explains Florida Statute 163.045, revised by SB 518 effective July 1, 2022: no local permit, fee, mitigation or replanting can be required for a residential tree documented as a danger by an ISA-certified arborist or Florida-licensed landscape architect.
  • Town growth. Windermere had 3,030 residents in 2020, up from 2,462 in 2010; Butler Bay was annexed in 2007 after more than 90% of its residents voted to join, while Isleworth stayed unincorporated.

Windermere Questions

Can you work on a dirt-road lot without tearing up the street?

Yes, with planning. We keep heavy equipment on firm ground, use mats where needed, and will move a job if heavy rain has softened the road. Tell us about access when you call.

Who do I ask about removing a healthy tree in Windermere?

Start with the Town of Windermere at 407-876-2563; the Tree Board page lists the Public Works Director as the contact. If the tree is dangerous and documented as such by an ISA-certified arborist or licensed landscape architect, state law limits what the town can require.

Is a crane ever needed for Windermere jobs?

Occasionally. When a large tree sits between a house and the lake with no room to lower pieces, a crane can be the safest way to lift sections out. We tell you at the estimate if we think that is the case and why.

Do you clean up completely on a lakefront lawn?

Yes. The written estimate lists cleanup: raking, blowing off docks and patios, and hauling the wood unless you want firewood left. Keeping debris out of the lake is part of the plan.
