Two Winter Gardens
Tree Service in Winter Garden covers two very different kinds of property. Around Plant Street and the historic downtown, homes sit under mature oaks and the odd surviving citrus tree. South of State Road 50, toward Horizon West, the subdivisions are young and the trees were planted by the builder a decade or two ago. The city grew from 14,351 residents in 2000 to 46,964 in 2020, and most of that growth was the second kind.
The older side of town
Winter Garden was a citrus town. The Great Freeze of 1894 and 1895 badly damaged the groves, and back-to-back freezes in the 1980s finished most of what was left; citrus production in Winter Garden and Orange County never recovered. What remains are scattered old grove trees and big oaks in established yards. Old citrus is often worth removing once it is hollow or covered in decline; old oaks are usually worth keeping with good pruning.
The newer side
In newer neighborhoods the problems are different. Builder-planted trees often went in too close to the house, the sidewalk or each other, and now their crowns touch the gutters. Some have girdling roots from the nursery container. A young tree that is pruned well at 10 or 15 years old will need far less work at 30, so this is where structural pruning pays off most. These are also the yards where HOA approval usually comes before any removal; ask your association what it needs in writing.
Lake Apopka on the northern edge
The city's northern boundary is Lake Apopka, Florida's fourth largest lake at about 30,800 acres. Yards near the shore get the full sweep of wind off open water during summer storms, and trees there tend to show it in one-sided crowns. We check those trees for lean and root lift after any big wind event.
People here tend to stay
Census data show 90.3% of Winter Garden residents lived in the same home a year earlier, and households average almost three people. Families who stay put tend to plan tree work over several years: a pruning cycle on the shade trees, a removal when one fails, a stump ground so the kids have lawn back. We are glad to schedule it that way.
What we handle
- Removal of declining citrus and laurel oaks in older yards
- Structural pruning on young builder-planted trees
- Clearing branches off roofs, pool cages and fences

Winter Garden Background
- Fast growth. Winter Garden's population went from 14,351 in 2000 to 34,568 in 2010 and 46,964 in 2020, a 35.9% increase over the last decade, much of it in new subdivisions.
- Citrus and freezes. The Great Freeze of 1894-1895 severely damaged local citrus, and back-to-back freezes in the 1980s hurt it again; citrus production in Winter Garden and Orange County never recovered.
- Lake Apopka border. Lake Apopka, about 30,800 acres and the fourth largest lake in Florida, forms the city's northern border.
- Settled households. Census QuickFacts reports a 65.7% owner-occupied rate, 2.96 persons per household, and 90.3% of residents in the same house a year earlier (2020-2024).

Winter Garden Questions
Is it worth saving an old orange tree in my yard?
Sometimes. If the trunk is solid and it still sets fruit, light pruning can keep it going. If it is hollow, heavily dieback-covered or leaning, removal and a stump grind usually make more sense.
My HOA says I need approval to remove a tree. Can you help with that?
We can give you a written description of the tree's condition and the work proposed, which most associations ask for. The approval itself comes from your HOA.
The builder planted an oak three feet from my house. What should I do?
It depends on the species and size. A young tree can sometimes be pruned to grow away from the house, but a large-growing oak that close usually ends up a removal. It is cheaper to decide early.
How often should young trees in a new subdivision be pruned?
For most shade trees planted by builders, a structural pruning pass every two to three years while they are young sets a single strong leader and spaces the main limbs. After that, a lighter visit every few years keeps them off roofs and lights.
Do you work on the Lake Apopka side of Winter Garden after storms?
Yes. After a strong wind event we prioritize trees resting on houses, fences or driveways, then come back for the cleanup. Call (407) 641-4203 with photos and we can tell you what to expect.
