A Pine Woods Town Grown Up

Before it was a suburb, Lake Mary was pine woods. The early settlements of Bent's Station and Belle Fontaine along the South Florida Railroad drew lumbermen, turpentine workers and Swedish orange growers. Tree Service in Lake Mary still reflects that past: in many neighborhoods, tall pines and oaks left standing from that era now tower over the houses built among them.

The City of Lakes

Lake Mary's motto is 'City of Lakes.' The city is named for Mary Sundell, wife of Rev. J.F. Sundell, who settled on the north shore of the lake. Lake Mary, Crystal Lake and many smaller lakes and retention ponds mean plenty of trees growing on banks and slopes. Those trees deserve a closer look for root exposure and lean, especially after a long rainy season.

Pines need a different eye

A mature pine does not fail like an oak. Oaks tend to shed limbs; pines are more likely to snap high in the trunk or tip at the roots. Signs we check on Lake Mary pines: resin streaming or pitch tubes on the bark (beetle activity), browning needles from the top down, lightning scars running down the trunk, and soil heaving at the base. A pine that is dying usually goes quickly, so do not wait long once you see browning.

Established, comfortable homes

Census QuickFacts gives Lake Mary a median owner-occupied home value of $494,900, a 62.9% owner-occupied rate and 19.6% of residents 65 or older, with 85.1% in the same home a year earlier. Yards here are generally well kept, and owners care about how the property looks after the work is done. Our estimates spell out cleanup: raking, blowing off hardscape, and whether wood is hauled or left.

Incorporated in 1973

Lake Mary did not incorporate until August 7, 1973, even though settlers like Frank Evans arrived in 1882 and the post office opened in 1887. Its population grew from 13,822 in 2010 to 16,798 in 2020. A young city with old trees is a common Central Florida pattern: the subdivisions are recent, but some of the pines and oaks around them are not.

Lightning and tall trees

Central Florida summer storms bring frequent lightning, and the tallest pine on a block is often the one that gets hit. A struck pine may show a spiral strip of missing bark, or nothing at all, and then die within weeks as beetles move in. If you saw or heard a strike nearby, have the tree checked even if it looks fine.

Work we commonly do

1. Dead and dying pine removal, often in sections near the house 2. Oak pruning over roofs, driveways and pool enclosures 3. Bank and pond-edge tree assessments 4. Stump grinding and surface root cleanup for new beds or sod 5. Pre-hurricane-season deadwood removal

Lake Mary Questions

How fast does a dying pine become dangerous?

Faster than most hardwoods. Once a pine is browning from the top or showing beetle pitch tubes, it can become brittle within months. Have it looked at soon after you notice the change.

Do you work on trees beside retention ponds?

Yes. Pond banks are often soft and sloped, so we plan where sections land and keep debris out of the water. If the pond belongs to your HOA, it may need to approve work on its side of the line.

Is there a tree company near me in Lake Mary that gives written quotes?

Yes, we do. We visit, look at each tree and give a written estimate listing the work and cleanup. Call (407) 641-4203 or use the form.

My pine was struck by lightning but looks fine. Should I worry?

Keep a close eye on it for a few weeks. Struck pines often decline suddenly as bark beetles move in. Browning needles or pitch tubes on the bark mean it is time to remove it.

Do you prune oaks that hang over a Lake Mary pool enclosure?

Yes. We cut limbs back to healthy branches well clear of the screen, so the gap lasts, and catch debris so it does not end up in the pool.
