Canopy Trees vs. Everything Else
The City of Oviedo draws a clear line, and it shapes almost every Tree Service in Oviedo job: a permit must be obtained to remove any canopy tree inside city limits. Palms, fruit trees and understory trees such as crape myrtle do not need a removal permit. So the first question on an Oviedo estimate is simple. Is this an oak, a maple, a pine, or another canopy species, or is it something smaller?
What the canopy permit involves
Oviedo's Land Development Code says no one may remove a tree without first getting a clearing, grading and tree removal permit, and that the City Arborist must inspect the tree and approve its removal before it comes down. The city's application lists a fee of $46 per tree for tree-removal-only permits, plus a $25 technology fee. If replacement is required, the plan has to show the location, type and size of the new trees. We schedule the removal after the arborist's sign-off, not before.
The exempt trees
Because palms, fruit trees and crape myrtles are exempt from the removal permit, a lot of Oviedo work moves faster: removing a citrus tree with greening decline, taking out a cabbage palm that has lost its head, or replacing an overgrown crape myrtle by the driveway. Exempt does not mean careless. Palms near pools and fences still have to come down in pieces, and crape myrtles respond far better to thinning than to the hard topping often called 'crape murder.'
Clearance over walks and streets
The city's guidance for trees planted in the right-of-way or parkway gives specific clearances: 8 feet 6 inches over sidewalks and 14 feet 6 inches over roadways, with shrubs kept to 3 feet or lower for line of sight. City or contract crews trim right-of-way plantings for clearance and sight lines, not for looks. If you want a front-yard tree raised neatly to those heights, that is a job we can do.
Rivers and flooding
The Econlockhatchee River runs along the east side of Oviedo and the Little Econlockhatchee through the south. During Hurricane Ian in September 2022, flooding along the Econlockhatchee near Oviedo was among the Seminole County impacts. Trees in low, flooded yards should be checked once the water drops, because saturated roots can fail weeks later.
Old Oviedo and new Oviedo
Most downtown buildings date from the late 1800s and early 1900s, when celery and citrus ran the local economy, while much of the rest of the city is newer subdivisions. Census figures show 76.7% owner occupancy and nearly three people per household. We work on both: heritage oaks in the older blocks and young trees that builders set too close to the house.

Oviedo Questions
Do I need a permit to remove a palm tree in Oviedo?
No. The city's FAQ lists palms, fruit trees and understory trees such as crape myrtle as not needing a removal permit. Canopy trees like oaks do need one.
How much is Oviedo's tree removal permit?
The city's application lists $46 per tree for tree-removal-only permits, plus a $25 tech fee. Our written estimate covers the tree work itself and is separate from city fees.
How high should I trim my tree over the sidewalk?
Oviedo's guidance is at least 8 feet 6 inches over sidewalks and 14 feet 6 inches over roadways. Raising a canopy to those heights is a routine pruning job.
Can you remove a tree before the City Arborist inspects it?
Not for a canopy tree. The city requires inspection and approval first. The exception is a tree documented as dangerous by an ISA-certified arborist or Florida-licensed landscape architect under state law.
